Lymphatic Drainage is a manipulation of the skin in a rhythmic way that promotes the movement of lymph and releases the toxins throughout the body. It is gentle and relaxing. Massage are done my Laura Mayhew at Radiant Energy Wellness.
What is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is an integral part of the body's immune system, encompassing a network of tissues and organs.
Its primary function is to facilitate the removal of waste products, toxins, and pathogens, including bacteria and viruses, from the body.
Additionally, it plays a crucial role in transporting specialized white blood cells, crucial for immune response, through a fluid called lymph.
The Lymphatic system's plays a vital role in aiding the body's defense against infections.
Issues with the lymphatic system:
When the lymphatic system encounters blockages, infections, or diseases, its ability to effectively transport lymph is compromised.
As a consequence, lymph fluid may accumulate in certain areas of the body, leading to swelling and puffiness.
Certified lymphedema therapist, warns that prolonged accumulation of lymph can escalate the risk of infection, skin damage, and wounds.
Medical benefits of lymphatic drainage massage:
Originally developed to address the needs of individuals with lymphedema—a condition characterized by the buildup of fluid due to blockages or injury within the lymphatic system—lymphatic drainage massage aids in enhancing lymphatic circulation.
Beyond addressing lymphedema, this specialized massage technique offers a range of potential benefits:
Reduced swelling: A study in 2007 demonstrated that manual lymphatic drainage on the neck effectively reduced swelling following wisdom teeth removal.
Pain relief: A review in 2015 found that lymphatic drainage massage significantly reduced both swelling and pain in women with lymphedema after breast cancer treatment, based on six trials.
Alleviation of fibromyalgia symptoms: Although more research is warranted, a small study in 2009 suggested that lymphatic drainage massage may be more effective in reducing pain and stiffness in women with fibromyalgia compared to connective tissue massage.
What to expect during lymphatic drainage massage:
Each session runs 50 minutes.
Unlike traditional massage techniques such as Swedish or deep tissue, lymphatic drainage massage involves gentler skin stretching and lighter pressure.
The emphasis is on stimulating the lymphatic system rather than deep tissue manipulation.
